It is using a simple red circle to indicate the position.
As you already indicated the drawing layers cannot handle images or Font characters.
If you have some funding we can add it if you need it. Or else you can create an in-memory shapefile with the location.
This location can have images, fonts,etc, by using categories. Do understand using shapefiles instead of drawinglayers is a bit slower, but you can save all location into this shapefile which might be a benefit as well.
