Just an update from me.
We've been trying to investigate this further but is very hard to reproduce.
The source code of the legend control has been altered over the years and was 'born' almost a decade ago.
Early 2015 we'll start with MapWindow v5, this will include a redesigned/rewritten legend control.
I know it doesn't help you much ;)
